JUNE 2008
Beyond the Barrel
Opening Friday June 20th 5pm-9pm
Youngstown Secret Garden
Youngstown Secret Garden by Kath Schifano

The Niagara Arts and Cultural Center (NACC) is hosting the Beyond the Barrel and Open House on Friday, June 20th from 5:00-9:00pm. The semi-annual Red Door/Red Balloon open house is the perfect opportunity for anyone interested in the arts, classes for school aged children, theater, dance, music, the gallery or just curious about the NACC to get the opportunity to tour artist’s studios, see what is happening and meet the artists that make up the NACC.

This Open House offers the public an opportunity to see and purchase various artwork, custom jewelry, pottery and other items that the students in the 21stCentury Community Learning Center After School Program made. All proceeds from the student artwork will go directly back into the NACC’s After School Program.

In conjunction with the Open House activities, the 5th Annual Beyond the Barrel juried art exhibit will hold an opening reception in the Main Gallery. Nearly 30 artists with 70 different pieces of art from Western New York and Southern Ontario will have their work on display. A range of themes and mediums make Beyond the Barrel a regional showcase of contemporary artists. Judges Catherine Gillespie and Jonathan Rogers will award $1000 in prize money to selected work.

There are door prizes, people’s choice vote for best artist studio and live entertainment.

The Open House and Gallery Opening events are free of charge and a great way to support local artists and enjoy an evening of art, music and entertainment. Uniquely created art and jewelry make great graduation gifts.

Please be sure to enter through the red door on Portage Road and follow the red balloons to open studios. For more information, call the NACC at 282-7530.

COMEDY HOUR #3 -APRIL 19th
"So-Called Reality"

A man enters, stage right. Dressed in dark clothes, he is trailed by a large dog. He sits on a stool, refers to his notes, and begins...
As if hands had stretched an invisible string, the long arms gracefully draw out a plane, and the voice, rounds it all for the audience to grasp the three dimensions that are Jonathan Rogers.
We are here to listen about these things, and to envision a fourth dimension- 'The Intangible'. A master artist of paint and charcoal Jonathan Rogers pulls together a lifetime of experiences tying his whole being to the humanity of his thoughts. With gestures he drafts concepts in the air illustrating his philosophy in a performance were words and motion combine to form a language that is at once ethereal and gut level. The esoteric concepts he puts forth are as real as his full beard, and somehow as warm as his quick smile. During his talk he makes us acutely aware of our physical presence in this world and then suggests that there is something more. What that something more he has named 'The Intangible'...

Art of Beer a Success !
The NACC would like to thank everyone who supported our 2nd Annual Art of Beer event on Friday, March 7th. The snow storm did not deter our food and beer participants, nor the crowd of nearly 400 that came to the NACC for a sampling of beers. Check out last years event: AOB Photo Gallery

 dare Fire Saftey
Kids Say No to Drugs,
 Yes to Fire Safety !

Our after school kids faced a cool October day last week to take a stand against drug abuse on the corner of Portage and Pine. This week they learned what to do in case of a fire. Thanks to our home town heroes for coming over to NACC and giving our kids such a fun and informative day.
