2nd Annual Art

of Beer a Success!

The NACC would like to thank everyone who supported our 2nd Annual Art of Beer event on Friday, March 7th. The snow storm did not deter our food and beer participants, nor the crowd of nearly 400 that came to the NACC for a sampling of beers that included Flying Bison’s Red Aviator and Blackbird Stout, and Alternative Brew’s Hazelnut Brown Ale or the delicious menu offerings of pulled pork from The Brickyard Pub & BBQ, Eddie Jay’s Restaurant and Shorty’s Ultimate Sportsbar to name a few. In addition, Hard Rock Café served up a sweet Apple Cobbler, and Wiseguy’s Pizzeria had people coming back for more with their warm and delicious pizza.

The sounds of the homebrewing band the Twigz energized the crowd. Sharing the stage that evening was the Lakeside Blues Band during the second set. A great mix of music had event attendees turn the corridor into a dance floor well past 9:00pm. The bands were a great compliment to the offerings of beer and food that were plentiful.

Beer and food displays extended the entire length of the second floor, where Consumer’s Beverages greeted attendees as they entered the event serving an array of growlers filled with special brews, eight varieties total. Pearl Street Brewery & Grill brought their Lord Stanley Scotch Ale to serve and the Buffalo Brewpub brought local favorites, Buffalo Lager and Blizzard Bock. As part of Certo Brothers Distributing, Samuel Adam’s Cherry Wheat, Magic Hat’s Circus Boy, Coors Blue Moon and a fruity Blueberry beer from Ellicottville Brewery among many other ales were sampled. Certo Brothers also donated two cases filled of t-shirts, hats, bottle openers, pilsner glasses and key chains to our silent raffle.

For those who wanted a break from the samplings upstairs, a rich Kona Coffee provided by Bada Bean was served on the first floor. Bada Bean also served samples of Spinach Dip and a tangy Roasted Red Pepper Soup upstairs.

Back upstairs there were plenty more samples to try like: Phin & Matt’s Extrodinary Ale, a unique craft by Southern Tier Brewing. High Falls Brewing Company served a Dundee’s Doppel Bock, a festival special that is not available for purchase. Try-It Distributing brought Great Lakes Brewing Company’s Dortmunder Gold and Michelob Amber Bock. And a citrus twist was a pleasant side of Margaritaville’s Landshark Lager, reminding us that the warm days of summer can not be too far away.

The NACC’s in house kitchen, Madeline & Michael’s Catering served up pierogies, polish sausage and sauerkraut, turkey and rice, as well as pizza donated by Goodfella’s Pizzeria and DiCamillo’s Bakery.

The night’s big winners were announced with the help of Mayor Dyster drawing the tickets of the winners for the silent auction, 50/50 club and our two lucky winners of the roundtrip airfare donated by Myrtle Beach Direct Air. Larry Sherman and Daniel Vargas will be heading south to enjoy a vacation in Myrtle Beach, SC or Tampa, FL. All winners were thrilled with their winnings.

Special thanks to our volunteers and our sponsors and participants for making the 2nd Annual Art of Beer a success! The event would not be possible with the generosity of:

Say the words “Art of Beer” and what comes to mind?  Two strands of thought, one supposes...

The first, of course, centers around the idea that brewing–or at least craft brewing–is a form of artistry, and beer a form of artistic expression.  Mass-produced beers may be made in a factory-like setting, but the ethos of American craftbrewing is not much different from that of the artists and craftsmen at the NACC; the highest quality standards for process and ingredients, the desire for self-expression through one’s work, and the attempt to combine historic preservation with experimentation and innovation are hallmarks of both.  Learning more about how microbrewers create their art is part of what beer festivals are all about!

The second way of looking at “Art of Beer” is a little more literal-minded.  There is a lot of visual artwork associated with the packaging, marketing and advertising of beer.  From lithographs of brewery buildings from the late nineteenth century to brewery paraphernalia of the early twentieth century to the 21st century fine-art label designs of Ralph Steadman and others, art has always been a part of the face the beer industry shows to the world.

The “Art of Beer” will feature a selection of representative craft brews from the Greater Niagara region, served in the halls of our National Historic Registry building alongside exhibits of beer-related artwork and memorabilia.  Festival-goers will sample cuisine from both neighboring “Little Italy” restaurants and local brewpubs and specialty beer bars.
